Transforming ash into opportunity: advancing circular construction for a sustainable Europe

Ghent University paves the way to sustainability with eco-friendly pavers on campus: Carbon curing concrete
Pilot product: Eco-friendly paver blocks
Location: Ghent, Belgium
Technology: Carbon-curing concrete
Ash type: Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash
Ash replacement level: 20% of the binder
This pilot showcases the reuse of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash in carbon-curing concrete for the production of 50 m² of paver blocks. The mix design incorporated stainless steel slag and MSWI fly ash with a 20% ash replacement rate, and the pavers were cured in a CO₂ chamber under controlled temperature and humidity conditions.
UGent coordinated the work, with UGent and Orbix developing the mix, Orbix producing, Veolia supplying the ash, and SECO ensuring quality. The demonstration highlights how incineration ash can capture CO₂ during curing, enhancing concrete strength while converting waste into durable products.
