Transforming ash into opportunity: advancing circular construction for a sustainable Europe

Turning wood biomass fly ash into supplementary cementitious material

Pilot product: Alternative supplementary cementitious material
Location: Lyngby
Technology: Base metal removal
Ash type: Wood biomass fly ash
Targeted metals: Ca, Cl, Mg

This pilot shows the reuse of biomass ash as a replacement of the fine aggregates in concrete for paving blocks. As the ash was found to have little reactivity, it was instead attempted to replace virgin raw materials. The sand replacement was problem free, and produced pavers exceed requirements on all tested parameters. The ash contributes a pleasant, warm hue to the concrete.

SSA from Biofos (Waste water treatment plant) used as sand replacement in blended cement at IBF. Installation place TBD (Originally DTU).
