Transforming ash into opportunity: advancing circular construction for a sustainable Europe

Fired clay bricks with reduced clay content - a step to save primary raw materials
Pilot product: Bench with fired clay bricks
Location: Lyngby
Technology: Fired clay bricks
Ash type: Sewage sludge ash (SSA)
Ash replacement level: 30%
This pilot demonstrates that sewage sludge ash (SSA) can replace clay soil in fired clay bricks. SSA colours the bricks into reddish colours – the sustainability is simply visible!
DTU determined optimal SSA content in bricks at laboratory scale. Normal-sized bricks were made and fired at the Danish brickwork Petersen Tegl, and NEXT vocational students, masonry students designed and built a bench.
