Transforming ash into opportunity: advancing circular construction for a sustainable Europe

Keeping the house warm with tiny mass ovens from unfired clay bricks
Pilot product: Tiny mass oven by compressed earth blocks
Location: Rønde
Technology: Unfired clay bricks
Ash type: Sewage sludge ashes (SSA)
Ash replacement level: 5%
This pilot demonstrates that sewage sludge ash (SSA) can be used in the production of compressed earth blocks. SSA colours the bricks into reddish colours – the sustainability is simply visible!
DTU determined the optimal SSA content in unfired bricks at the laboratory scale. Sustainable living produced the compressed earth blocks and constructed the tiny mass oven in a residential house.
