AshCycle pilots in THE NETHERLANDS

Transforming ash into opportunity: advancing circular construction for a sustainable Europe

TU Delft demonstrates utilization of incineration residues in alkali-activated concrete with structural application

Pilot product: Sustainable urban AAM bench
Location: Municipality of Rotterdam
Technology: Alkali-activated concrete
Ash type: Municipal solid waste incinerated bottom ash and wood biomass fly ash
Ash replacement level: 25 wt.% of total precursor

This is the first industrial-scale application of alkali-activated concrete incorporating residual ashes in the Netherlands. The concrete to produce the bench uses wood biomass ash and municipal solid waste incinerated ash as binding material. The demonstration was carried out in collaboration with the Technical University of Delft, Mineralz (ash treatment), Haitsma Beton (concrete producer) and the Municipality of Rotterdam (governance).
